Choose Windows VPS for the right workload
When should you choose Windows rather than Linux?
Choose Windows when the application or administration workflow depends on Windows software or Remote Desktop. Choose Linux when the workload uses a Linux stack and does not require Windows applications.
Choose the VPS operating system around the workload
The main difference between a Linux VPS and a Windows VPS is software compatibility and the administration model. Choose Windows when the application explicitly requires a Windows Server role, IIS, classic .NET Framework, Windows-only software, or a Windows desktop administration workflow. Choose Linux for a Linux-native stack; ASP.NET Core and supported SQL Server versions can also run on Linux.
Is Remote Desktop alone a reason to choose Windows?
It is a workflow reason when administrators or applications require a Windows desktop session. Confirm that the actual software also supports the selected Windows Server version.
Do server snapshots replace application backups?
No. A server-level copy can help recover infrastructure, while databases and applications may require consistent, separately tested backups and retention rules.
